History:

TWIN VALLEY LEARNING CENTER (TVLC) is a non-profit, public service corporation committed to providing individualized instruction to students of all ages, regardless of race, creed, ethnicity or financial status. TVLC has been providing services since 1974, and is the only agency in the Tri-Valley area to offer professional tutoring at reduced rates to low-income families.

TVLC works cooperatively with parents and schools to assess student needs, sometimes through in-depth testing/screening, and to develop a specialized instructional plan for each student. Areas of instruction include all aspects of the K-12 curriculum, as well as specialized adult training (e.g. English and college math). We monitor progress through regular student assessments prepared by the tutors and through reports from parents/guardians.

TVLC is governed by a five-person Corporate Board of Directors which is comprised of business persons and parents from our community.

TVLC has three programs:

  1. TVLC provides one-to-one, fee-for-service tutoring in school subjects to students who are having trouble in school or who want to excel.

  2. TVLC provides subsidized one-to-one tutoring in school subjects to students who are having trouble in school and whose families are low-income.  In this case, the family usually pays from 33% to 50% of the cost of tutoring, and TVLC subsidizes the remaining cost.  These subsidies are possible through the grant funding that TVLC receives from generous foundations, agencies, and funders (see Benefactors).

  3. TVLC provides, at no cost, twice-weekly small group tutoring and homework support to the children who reside in either Livermore's homeless shelter or domestic violence shelter, operated by Tri-Valley Haven.
